After active orthodontic treatment, teeth need not only to reach the right position but also to stay there. That is why an orthodontist usually recommends a retention phase after braces or aligners.
Why retainers are needed
After teeth move, the surrounding tissues continue adapting. Without support, teeth may gradually shift back toward their previous position. Retainers help protect the result that has been achieved.
What options exist
- fixed retainers bonded to the inner surface of the teeth;
- removable trays or plates worn according to the doctor’s instructions;
- combined options when extra stability is needed.
Why following recommendations matters
The retention phase is just as important as active tooth movement. The more carefully a patient follows the wearing schedule and attends check-ups, the more reliably the new smile is maintained.
